I have the HF G30 and it's a fantastic camera! it's got a great lens and low light sensitivity. It also has a viewfinder if you're trying to shoot outdoors in bright sun. The manual lens ring can be set to zoom or focus and the whole camera is a real pleasure to use.

I would skip on the internal memory and go with just the SDXC cards because they're cheaper and because you can remove them from the camera an stick them in a fast card reader. I have 2x 64GB and have a UHS version in my primary slot because it can transfer data to my computer's SSD at 150MB/s

Also, the generic batteries on Amazon work perfectly with both the camera and charger and they're about 1/3 the cost of the Canon batteries.

Other than it not being 4k, it's got everything I've ever wanted

I'll back up optodata's post. One of my cameras is a Canon XA20, which is a G30 with a handle. Video quality is exactly the same. Nice to use & shoots beautiful video in the right hands.

There are quite a few excellent 4K cameras well under $3000... Canon XC10 4K, Pana XC1000 (4K @ 60p), Sony AX100 & the list goes on. My little Sony action cam shoots nice 4K (under $AU 600).

Cheers - Tony

Thanks so much. They don't list the full names and my capture expierience has been limited. Now I can purchase with confidence. I like multi camer shoots of bands so I can edit with a 14 channel audio track leveled and processed after the event.

You seem to have a bigger budget than I do, but I bought 2 Canons, used and refurb, HF M40 and M41. They have the same CMOS Pro sensor as the G30, but no 60fps, no zebra, and you guys get a better lens. For under $500 each I get 2 very nice cameras for multi-cam shoots. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)
Nvidia GTX 960(4GB)/16GB DDR3/
Canon Vixia HV30/HF-M40/HF-M41/HF-G20/Olympus E-PL5.

I am assuming it is compatible with PD13 since you responded. Was about to buy a hd camcorder but the images I have seen from the gh4 are stunning. Also have a better understanding of the 10 bit recording benefits. So would you agree it is the best bang for the buck atm? Just under $2800 us gets a lense and 64 gig card.

Are you using the metabones speedbooster?

Thanks

Hi Ray

Yes, the footage from the GH4 is certainly stunning. The features are great too, wth slow motion, stop motion and time lapse all built in. The wifi is great fun as well. I often use it with my Ipad as a controller. Really, it's all the things I ever wanted in a camera.

I don't us the Metabones speedbooster, but I did invest in a 7" field montitor.

So far as lenses are concerned. I have the standard 14-140 which came with the GH2 plus an Olympus 60mm 2.8 macro and I have recently bought a Panasonic 45-175 powered zoom which is nice, especially if you use a zoom controller with it so there is no movement during the zoom.

I have some old Minolta lenses that are years old, I obtained a converter to Micro four thirds and they work very nicely as well.

The nice thing about using different lenses is it gives you so much more control over your creativity.

Overall, I am extremely glad I took the plunge and upgraded to a GH4. The GH2 is good as well, but no bells or whistles.

In the UK the price on Amazon is just under £1400, so if your lens is a good one the price you quote is about right. A 64gb works well, but I read somewhere that 128gb might not.

If you get one, I do hope you enjoy it and all it's features.

How much time at max 4k are u getting with 64 gig card? I have watched the pro's in Hollywood for years with the assistant running zooms. What a treat....

Thanks sooo much.. Was going for the canon hf 30 but will save a little longer.

What I meant to say in the last post was how good the battery life is with the GH4. It lasts the duration of all my projects so far, and sometimes I'm shooting for a couple of hours with the camera on for most of the time.

So far as the 64gb card is concerned, all I can say is I haven't managed to fill one yet with a single project.

I don't think you will regret your decision

Good luck

Found a post that said 2.51 hrs on the 64 gig cards. I am looking to start with live band recording in a club atmosphere so the 128gb cards would make me safe. I will power the cameras mounted on sticks and crane so that takes care of the battery issue.

I got to use a older hd camera that had 5 hrs with a full charge. Was quite surprised since I have been out of this for some time.

Lastly I just reveiwed against the cannon hf 30. It has a great bang for the buck but..... I have plans to tackle any sort of project you can imagine so I am sold. Gh4 with a compatible lense and less than f2 rating.

Thanks

Rayt McLaughlin

Just need to hit the lottery for the second camera !

Hi Ray

Are you in the european Union?

Reading about your plans reminded me that there is a restriction on the length of continous recording on European models. There are a couple of things you should be aware of:

1 European DSLR-like cameras are restricted to 29 minutes and 59 seconds of continuous recording. After that you have to reset. I read somewhere that if that didn't happen they would be classed as a camcorder and have a higher rate of import tax.

2 The GH4, when continuously recording, will create separate files of 4gb. The camera does not stop recording, but you end up with multiple files, each of 4gb. While this is not a problem with video, the audio can be broken. However the file can be stitched together in post.

Also, as I mentioned in the earlier post, there is no mention of a 128gb card being suitable - so wise to check

I'm not sure if these restictions are just Panasonic or market wide.

I hope this information helps you

Robert

My 7 year old Canon HG21 has a great picture, and has been very well supported in every version of PD.
I'm probably going to keep this camera forever. Just bought a new battery for it.

It may be outdated, but I just bought a Sony FDR-AX33 4K camcorder, and for my usage, the picture isn't any better, despite it being 4K .
