How to do the talking orange in powerdirector-solved

I saw the youtube video of the talking orange and also a tutorial of how to do this in Adobe premier pro. Can it be done in powerdirector 10? I messed around with it by making a mask to show just a mouth over the orange but I can't figure out how to blur the edges of the mask so the mouth gently blends in with the orange. In Adobe there is a tool for that.
See attachment.

You can only do a primitive type mouth-talk. You need a png of a mouth, overlaid on the orange, then use MODIFY to give it an orange blurry border, and key-frame the mouth motions over-and-over, wide, narrow, wide open, I have examples (I've done this twice) but I must leave, I'll check in later. Here are 2 brief examples of mimicking speech using a PNG.
These were done some time ago in what I believe is the greatest Halloween video ever produced (by me)!?

Thanks for the reply. I enjoyed your video. I don't think what I want can be done in PD alone like with Adobe Premiere. Maybe a custom mask can be made with some transparency at the edges in Paint.net. I have Paint.net but I don't know how to erase without doing a 100% erase. I was thinking 50% or so transparency around the edge of the mask where the eyes and mouth would be would allow the skin of the orange to show through. Or blur the edge of the mask like the Adobe premiere tutorial on Youtube.
Any other ideas anyone? Windows 10 professional

I'm sure that would work, these samples could have been produced better, but in a lengthy video, I felt it was good enough, and went on to the next "trick". You CAN do it! HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Just a thought, but rather than trying to simulate a moving mouth as Barry has suggested, you could use an actual person's mouth instead.

Try covering a person's face in a chromakey friendly makeup, then film their mouth closeup. Drop the image of the orange on the first track, and the mouth video on the second. Then modify the mouth video and enable chroma keying, using the makeup color.

I can't say I've tried it, but it might be something to experiment with. PowerDirector 10 Ultra

SkullyHB that's what I would have tried first. PD has been giving me trouble with chromakeys, but just use a color that will blend in, maybe orange in this case, and you should be Ok. __________________________________

Do you mean putting on a green hood with a cut out for the mouth? Have you watched any of the talking orange videos on youtube? They are done quite nicely.

Hi Heavytiger -

I think we're probably talking about A***e A***r E*****s - i.e. how the talking orange videos were created. That's a whole different kettle of fish.

Your masking idea sounds like it could work, especially if the mask has a feathered edge so it blends in with the surrounding skin.

You could use a real mouth as has been suggested... or draw some basic mouth shapes and use them as animators do. The attached video contains the eight basic mouth positions to replicate speech.

Me? I use CrazyTalk Pro when I need that sort of effect.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Heavy T,

Using your image you provided above, softened the edges, found some stock lips, tweaked the hues/saturations a bit, and here’s the results.
(Note: Doing some extra pre and post production color correction to the lips sequence, as well as using key frame to keep them better centered would help. But only spent about 20-25 minutes on this, to see if / what might be possible in PD10.)

Hi Cranston

You did a great job. How did you soften the edges of the mask?

Also, my plan is to include the eyes. I am going to use a real person, probably myself. I will talk and hold real still. How do I do the mask since only one mask can be made over a video clip in PD. I need a mask with transparency for the mouth and both eyes. Would I use paint.net and create oval transparencies on the orange for both mouth and eyes. Then in PD use the same video of me talking on 3 pip tracks and adjust each so the eyes and mouth are properly aligned to fit inside the oval transparencies of the orange?

thanks, Windows 10 professional

Hi HT,

To soften/gradient the transparent oval, see instructional image below.
Then yes, do just as you described, by layering the Orange mask on top of your footage and aligning it all to match together.

Hi Cranston,

Super Job.

Your talking Orange is great, but you should be aware that when Multi-Linguistic Lip
Recognition is applied it appears to be saying some rather rude words in Welsh!

Hi Pat C,

Really? I didn't know that. (There was no audio that came with the lips footage.)
Oh well. So be it.
Besides, I'm not that popular in Wales anyway. So...

I was a little slow to post this reply but I finally did make a talking fruit in Pd. I had to first learn some Paint.net basics. Then I followed Cranston's crystal clear instructions. I attached a very short video of the talking tomato I made in PD 10.

Thanks for everyones input and suggestions
