I just bought Cyberlink Powerdirector 10 and am new to the software,

today when i imported a high quality video and placed the video on the editing strip, the video preview was a black screen, yet i could still hear the audio perfectly. The video was of very high quality and was 1.2GB in size, still in .avi extension though.

Edit: i cant even upload a 50mb clip to this sites forum as an attachment. if you really need to see the video itself to analyze the problem, PM me.

EDIT: Here is the diagnostic, also here is the MediaInfo for one of the avi files, although any movie i play gives the same issue, including the samples included with the software itself:

1. Which operating system do you use, W7, Vista, XP?
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
2. Which version of PD, See Part A below
Powerdirector 10
3. Which SR number (available in the "About" box of PD and is NOT the CD-Key!)
VDE110926-01
4. What kind of video source material used (codec / container), extension? We often ask for a 5 to 10 second sample , please provide one as an attachment.
Included one of the videos that wont work
5. A detailed step by step description of the problem. See Part D below.
5.1.) Open powerdirector
5.2.) import a video, any video, any format
5.3.) drag and drop it into the edit strip
5.4.) make sure the lines are before the clip i have added, get ready to watch a preview in the right-hand preview field
5.5.) see the first frame of the video and a circle with a plus, indicating its ready to be previewed
5.6.) press play, preview area goes black instantly and only hear audio from the clip. audio is perfect though.
5.7.) try to enable shadow boxes because the video is of high quality
5.8.) repeat 5.3-5.6
5.9.) still doesnt work
5.10.) become sad and here we are.

6. What anti-virus solution is installed on your PC?
BitDefender Antivirus Plus 2012
7. What codec packs installed? See PD's Readme html file
10.00.1012
8. What other video editing programs are installed - just in case there is a software conflict.
None whatsoever
9. What burning software is installed on your PC?
PowerISO
10. What type of blank disk was used, if you have a burning create issue?
No blank discs used
11. What background processes / programs running (especially important for problems with the burning)?
happens whether or not i have programs in the background
12. Provide the dxdiag log file as an attachment, see Part B below
Done.

My computer is a custom built i7 2600K 3.4Ghz processor, and i have 2 Radeon HD 6870 graphic cards, and 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a 2TB HDD and a Solid state drive. I know the issue isnt my computer. It asked if i would enable shadow files to make previewing easier for lower end computers, but since i have a very very good computer i skipped this. when the preview didnt work in the first place, i then decided to try using the shadow files option and I still got the same result, black screen preview and perfect audio.

Can anybody help me out?

Everything is now there, do you have anything to help now?

It appears that your file was a video capture using Fraps. Fraps has a proprietary codec. My guess is that PD does not support that codec directly. Can't say for sure because I've never worked with anything recorded using the Fraps codec.

Try opening the file in another video editing program and producing the file to another format, then pull that into PD. According to the Fraps website, Windows Movie Maker should be able to do it (as long as it's on the same computer that Fraps is installed on). That should also reduce the file size.

A re-install is sometimes needed, but your reference to a missing dll is based on nothing I am aware of, yet you suggested it as the culprit with complete confidence.

I have just posted on this subject, I am getting the same thing and it appears to be a codec problem with the FRAPS video capture. I have found something about this problem at TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC) also video on YouTube about it.
I was hoping to make HD video in Power Director 10 of Flight Simulator X so I did not want to use FRAPS as this compresses the AVI to MPEG and you loose all the sharpness.
Hope this information helps you.

I have used Fraps (free version) to video screen capture (full screen). The video displays in PD10 without any problem. I see no problem with Fraps' codec.

Way to high: Bit rate : 414 Mbps
24, 28 bits should be ok.

For PD use a single graphics card.
