Hi, I have a problem with PD 8 constantly crashing.

I cannot give specific details of how to replicate the crashes as its intermittent, but thought I'd get the discussion started to see if anyone else is experiencing these problems and see whether there is a replicable pattern..

As a general rule, PD will crash when I click on something to edit immediately after editing something else. For example, yesterday I was working on a project with multiple clips with 2s fades between them. If I edit the first fade to 1s and then immediately double click the second fade to edit it, the system *may* crash.

The crashes tend not to happen when I wait for some time between edits.

I know this is not a lot to work on, but was hoping others with similar problems can post the steps that are resulting in their crashes to find a pattern.

Is it crashing, or just freezing temporarily? Does it happen on small videos, or big ones? It sounds like you may be trying to move on before PD has finished it's work. Remember, the bigger the video, the more memory it takes, and if you don't have enough physical memory it goes to the hard drive which will really slow it down. My laptop was slow on transitions, but my desktop has no trouble. just one possibility.

Its crashing - programme exits and Vista pops up the trying to find a solution to this problem dialogue box. The clips are a mix - largest is 400mb.

Spent about an hour editing today and it only crashed once. Again, it was when I was editing transitions. Unfortunately, I cant replicate the broblem with specific steps.

Hi Mark,
Ok, I'm not on a Vista set up (I'm going to jump from XP to W7 after it has its first update) and the faults might be related to the OS - I doubt it in this instance.

I understand you can not pinpoint the issue BUT you can give more detail of content and provide a visual image as well as a diagnostic of your set up. Please note that 3 (x100kb) images can be attached to your reply.

Mark, just to confirm I also have the crashing issue that you are experiencing. I am using XP SP3. Again I can not re-create with any consistancy or determine at what point the crash occurs. I too have experienced the editing of a title, and when placing another jpeg or video into the timeline.

I have a support ticket in with cyberlink support and they have been getting me to go through a few things, with no luck. Have you solved or found the cause?

Sorry Dafydd I have not provided exact details. The crashign is so unexpected so I can not re-create - fyi.

Robin,

Title > scroll up > Title altered and saved > select Project save as > PD8 will then crash on an XP set up without saving the project.

If that helps.

It isn't easy to localise and I have reported this particular bug.

Thanks Dafydd,

Yes it is strange as editing title isn't consistant, but I will stay away from the save as after editing and saving title change.

I checked some of your other replies to crashing issues and have turned off the Shadow Edit File option and tried my timeline issue and it may have improved. I will need to do more work to see if this has been resolved. I will let tech support know if this is the case.

Thanks

Hi Dafydd

Support got back to me and requested the DxDiag.txt file which I have now supplied.

I have been away but just started to continue on with the DVD that I have been trying to create and it seems to be quite consitantly a problem when editing a Title and then clicking the Save Project icon.

Do you know of any workaround or have they fixed this issue (Title editing) yet? It is quite frustrating as using the Title is quite important. With this the crash also occurred on editing the Menus, the text part.

FYI

Hi Dafydd

FYI - this is what TS replied with:

-------
In regards to your concern we want to inform you that we have checked the file sent by you and found Nero, Arcsoft, Matroska, Vorbis and Theora decoders installed on your computer.

We suggest you to uninstal all these decoders and softwares and instal PowerDirector 8 again.

Now try to use the software.
----------

What is your experience with any of these other apps causing such issues.

I am reluctant to make my PC just a PowerDirector machine as I use it for many other purposes. I am not keen on uninstalling apps that I use as it is quite difficult in re-installing all these things again, with setting etc.

I would think that a commercial product should be able to co-exist in todays operating environment.

Would these decoders be the problem given that PoerDirector is the last product I have installed?

Robin
