Thanks for that file i have some completed some intial comparisons. It looks like to me you have some outdated PowerDVD 10 files. Would you reinstall the 2701 update or is there a specific reason you are using an older release?

I ran into a interesting issue the other night. I was watching a movie with plain old PCM decoded by PowerDVD for the HDMI audio option. I will admit the video/audio was near perfect playback until about 3/4 through the movie. The screen went black. I could not get powerdvd to respond. I used the back menu and it went back to Windows media center. I looked for a crash log but did not find it. I went back into powerdvd from WMC and it started up all over from the beginning. Dispicable Me blu ray region a.

Odd it looks like attachments are disabled or i am blind tonight.

I'm deliberately running the older PDVD10 after downgrading from 2701 due to the issue of not being able to play mounted ISOs through the 7MC plugin, I'll therefore pass on re-installing it!

In relation to DXVA it is enabled and operating for PDVD10, but as I understand it ATI cards currently don't support some aspects of version 2 of the standard and that's why DXVA-HD shows as not supported. The majority of codecs currently used for blu-ray are supported and whenever I've tested Hardware Video Acceleration with either PDVD or MPC-HC it has been in use and working.

Interesting so it is a driver issue of sorts and at least folks are aware and hopefully working to improve the driver.

All right since i was not finding 23hz mode on my new TV for 24P playback, so I decided to try something else and made a few discoveries. I got the hair brained idea that the 3d playback mode was forcing 23hz so why not watch a 3d movie with powerdvd 10.

Panasonic Avatar Blu Ray 3D region A

No 3d, not even menus, very odd I know i had this working.
Ran 3d vision wizard and 3d was working, but ending game screen shots were not. Ok something broke!
Reset 3d vision settings to defaults.
Started a new 3d wizard and 3d was working, but ending game screen shots did not display this time. Odd I remember they showing before.
PowerDVD 3d was still 2d! Very odd cause i started a game up with 3dtv play and bam there is 3d. Run the test steroscopic 3d and leave it at 1280 x 720 60hz. Nice 3d and working. Bump it up 1920 x 1080 23hz. NO 3d at all. Ok this i just wrong i remember this crap working. The last thing i did was 3dtv play 14 day trial was expiring so i decided to purchase it so i could enjoy games. I activated it and now i wonder if that activation messed me up!
Uninstalled 3dtv play. Same issues!
Uninstalled ALL nvidia drivers, nvidia hdmi audio drivers, and nividia physx!
Rebooted.
installed the same 270.61 drivers again.
Noticed the TV this time wanted to default to 1080p 23hz. Hey wait that is the resolution i have been looking for!
Did not install 3dtv play and used the default version included for 1080p 3d blu ray playback.
Setup wizard for 3d and seemed fine.
Started powerdvd with 3d blu ray and checked settings.
Blu ray 3d working again!
Exit powerdvd.
Odd the 1080p 23hz is no longer available! The only option now is HD 3D 1080p 23hz! Ahh I will revisit this more later might be a driver issue since both are 1080p 23hz and maybe it can not support HD 3D and HD SD labels.
Installed and activated my full version of 3dtv play.
Ran setup wizard again. 3d was working for 720p and 1080p both.
Ran powerdvd and 3d continued to work!

Confirmed audio was set at PCM decoded by powerdvd over the HDMI.
Started the movie, by the time i got about 3/4 of the movie finished it had randomly stopped the audio, video went black screen, tv indicatted no signal, then audio started up again with video!
Not exactly the problems i was having at 60hz, but disappointing that i uncovered a problem at 24p playback. I understand it was 3d 24p playback which may push the system more, but i have the CPU and a decent GPU so it shouldn't matter.

By that point i got interrupted by a visitor and they really wanted to see 3d avatar. shut down the computer and moved the disk to my 3d blu ray player. Yes that is right i got smart and bought a real 3d blu ray player so i could run hardware test and prove the only equipment failing is the powerdvd. We enjoyed the whole 3d movie with HD audio bitstreaming over HDMI through the same Denonn receiver and Pansonic TV with 100% perfect playback. This is something i have been striving for on my media center because thats is what i want most. The all in one MEDIA CENTER that does it all.

I admit the PCM decoded by powerdvd over hdmi has less problems then HD audio bitstreaming. I also admit that dts/dolby bitstreaming has less problems than the HD audio bitstreaming. So far i do not see an improvement in 24p versus 60hz, but like i said it was 24p 3d playback versus 60hz standard playback. I will see if i can force 24p playback yet in standard mode.

i did a quick compare of my dxdiag and i see no real difference. So i need to check a few things because maybe I reset the desktop after my 3d blu ray testing. Sorry i have a habbit of not leaving it in 3d mode. I believe the software should allow a user to pick if 3d is detected which resultion to use and the software change to it. I would love to see the same option for 24p playback support. If 24p was used on the blu ray or dvd then allow a setting to switch to the users favorite 24p screen resolution for playback.

Any new thoughts on my recent findings?

All right i didn't expect to be back so soon, but now powerdvd is hanging. No crash logs that i can locate. Plan old powerdvd not responding according to windows task manager.

Pop in 3d blu ray dispicable me.

Well it seems i have to loose faith in receiving any help on my issue. Cyberlink Technical Support has failed again... My reply on 2011/04/29 has finally been answered with garbage...
I guess they missed the part that i am running 2.8ghz quad core cpu...

Lets look at some facts...
Playback improves with a lower quality audio and seems to have an issue with HD audio playback. Sadly it is not broken 100% or i could totally point the finger at it.
2nd there are complaints about the current nvidia drivers messing with certain video encodings during playback and the suggestion is always to use the latest drivers with this known problem. Please talk to Nvidia about this issue you are a developer and you have a right to complain back to them and ask them why their driver does not work with your software.

I would like to inform you that, Blu-ray playback consumes far more CPUs power than DVDs. I would request you to please close other application and while playback do not run other activities like downloading and screen saver application.

Follow the steps to Start Windows in Selective Startup mode.

1. Click on Start.
2. Click on Run.
3. Type msconfig and click on OK.
4. A System Configuration Utility window will come up.
5. On General tab, select Selective Startup.
6. Uncheck "Load Startup Items".
7. Click on Apply.
8. Click on OK.
9. Click on Close.
10. It will ask you to restart your computer.

Edit 1 i decided to reply to this crappy request today after some testing just to humor their request...
Yes Blu-ray playback consumes far more cpu power than DVD, but I have a core 2 QUAD 2.8ghz cpu.
I am not even breaking 5% usuage of the cpu during playback.

I have no other applications running durring playback, unless i start windows media center and use the powerdvd from there. This of course has files for windows media active and trying to use the special cinema mode of powerdvd.
Previous testing with just powerdvd classic mode has eliminated windows media center causing the issue.

I have no screen savers active and all power saving is disabled with a maximun performance override.

Your instructions are NOT correct for windows 7, since there is no RUN on the start menu thanks for supplying information that applies to vista and not my windows 7 operating system.
I did run msconfig through a different method and configured it as suggested.
The problem still occurs randomly in the movies after they have been actively watched for a period of time.

With task manager i can clearly see an average of 3% cpu usuage and I am no where ever near 100% and saturating my cpu.
The highest spike was to 6%!

I firmly believe there is a problem with powerdvd and nvidia drivers.
There seems to be problems with the bitstreaming of HD audio with the current release drivers of 270.61.
The bitstreaming under the 260.89 seems to work better, but hd bitstreaming is broken if the playback is stopped and requires a restart to fix.

There are clearly times with the video frames are dropped and thus maybe the audio sync is getting interrupted.
I believe this eventually leads the problem i encounter where it decides the audio and video sync are unacceptable and tries to start a fresh playback by stopping audio and video brefiely to get a fresh start again.

Sadly the easiest fix is to use the 258.96 driver release to fix the video frame drop issue.
I admit using this driver does improve playback with pcm decoded by powerdvd and bitstream of dts/dolby.
The sad part is these drivers do NOT support HD audio on the gtx 460.

Please purchase a GTX 460, install the latest drivers, and try to enjoy a movie with HD Audio bitstreaming to an AVR and display on a 24p or 60hz flat screen tv.

Well maybe they are just blowing smoke at me to blind side me or they agree there is a problem with Nvidia drivers. I hope we see a fix to make it as enjoyable as my stand alone 3D blu ray player.

Same issues as previous drivers. Eventually the playback reaches a point where the video pauses, the audio stops, everything tries to start up again, audio in plays but video very jerky till it is in sync again.
So far the new nvidia beta driver does not fix the issues encountered.

blu-ray 3d playback showed better video/audio sync and less frame drops.
This time the video would pause and the audio would keep going. It didn't seem to get completly out of sync and go to a black screen and try to start fresh.

I need to run more testing but this suggestion was from a Nvidia forum post.

It is not a fix, but way to reduce the issue until a fix is found. For those that can use the older driver and do not require HD audio bitstreaming via the NVIDIA driver it is still recommended to use the 258.96 driver release.

No matter what i tried this movie had nothing but issues. The video would stutter or even stop. It even did the old famous video and audio stop, black screen, and finally restart.
I tried all 4 different modes looking for fix. The best part was the last 3 tests were not even reading the blu ray anymore and playing from a cached version. This of course led to a major stutter when it finally reached the point where it had to start reading the disc again.
I removed the blu ray and popped into a 3d blu ray player with HD audio bitstreaming to the same equipment. It played flawless and never had an issue. Why did PowerDVD have issues?

The v2916 seems better. I wish i had a way to collect better information about this issue. I feel like frames are still being dropped when they should not causing my audio and video problem.

I also noticed the 3d 1920x1080x32x24 was very grainy and i need to downgrade the video driver to see if it is still this way.

Hi,

the same problem here, but I think I found the answer. In my case these hiccups occur only when playing region-free blu-ray movies (e.g. Gone with the wind, The break-up). All the other regions such as AB play fine. It's another PowerDVD region bug.

Back in the days of PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra I had a similar problem when B region blu-ray movies stuttered in Vista and then technical support confirmed that it was a bug related to region codes.

I did some testing and it looks like this bug is triggered by swapping blu-ray movies of different regions without closing the PowerDVD. Maybe there's a bug in PowerDVD's blu-ray load routine which makes particular types of blu-rays to stutter (in my case region-free blu-rays).

Playback order without closing the PowerDVD:

1. Gone with the wind (region-free). Plays normally.
2. Planet of the Apes (AB regions). Plays normally.
3. Gone with the wind (region-free). Starts hiccuping very often.
4. Planet of the Apes (AB regions). Plays normally.

Back in the days of PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra I had a similar problem when B region blu-ray movies stuttered in Vista and then technical support confirmed that it was a bug related to region codes.

This might explain why SOMETIMES it was not a constant problem. I don't think i have any region-free releases, but i know i have some A and ABC releases. Maybe you are considering the ABC releases as region free, but my thought on this would be no region code mentioned on the package or disc. IE home video. I have one concern since i can't find a system spec from you, but I am guessing based on your luck you are using an ATI card.

I have been dead on these forums as CS never gave any further information and just closed all of my tickets. I stopped visiting the forums and purchased a stand alone player.

I have been thinking about reviving my blu ray support in my media center, but after visiting and reading here it seems not much has changed since i left. I doubt this weekend i will have free time, but maybe before next month i can start testing the latest 3306 version.

I have no desire to purchase PDVD 11 as it seems it will not fix my problem either, but maybe i will download the latest trial and see if it is still having the same issue as 10. I wont turn down a full PDVD 11 key for all my problems and hassles if the trial works, but i am not giving any money since my stand alone blu ray play is working 100% flawless with bitstreaming and 3d. That is a lot more than i can say for my pdvd 10 ultra...

As far as I know it's region-free if you find the letters ABC or if all the letters are missing from the package. But I probably have to take my words back. I've lately watched movies of different regions (B, AB, ABC) and it looks like this problem is more title-based than region-based. DISABLE VIRTUAL CD DRIVES (such as PowerISO/CloneCD etc)



It works for me, if the software used to work before, then this simple work will solve it.


After setting no of virtual drives to 0, may need to relaunch the BD-Ray playback software - such as PowerDVD 10

[somehow those virtual drive simulation makes the disc access slower]

Hi all,

I had the same problem, neither playing with the PowerDVD settings nor with the nVidia driver settings helped. Disabling or removing Virtual Clone Drive did not help either.

After I updated my nVidia display drivers to the latest beta release (290.36) the problem dissapeared.

Problem re-appears again with the latest nVidia Drivers v296.10. Downgrading to v290.36-beta "solves" the problem again.
