PD15 Shadow files

Some minor improvements to timeline fluidity but nothing that would provide a smooth user editing experience for high res timeline content, hence a need for some form of shadow/proxy file for many.

It appears PD15 has provided less CPU encode throttling when creating the shadow files compared to PD14, chart attached. This provides for another ~2x reduction in generation time relative to PD14, 2707. The downside is probably more sluggish operation for those that don't like to simply wait for the completion of the shadow file generation and/or have limited CPU capability. Too bad they didn't allow the user more functionality, http://forum.cyberlink.com//forum/posts/list/46732.page#242510

I have Hyper-threading turned on while generating the comparison chart so %CPU load is artificially low but still represents a proper PD15 vs PD14 relative load comparison.

Ok thanks JL for these data.
Well you couls hope for better perf....
but still love to use PD14 above others for the bunch of nice and efficient functions.

with a TL fluidity that would be the best consumer video editor... I7 950, 10 Go Ram, GTX960, SSD 256, HD 2 To, with professional music devices.
PD 14 since dec 2015.

Jeff -

That's consistent with my observations, though I wasn't monitoring CPU load.

Example: The same 4K clip from Sony RX10III (XAVC H.264) - 1:09 duration - was imported with shadow files enabled. PDR14 generated the shadow file in 1:02, where PDR15 only took 31 seconds.

Non-Example: 4K clip from Samsung NX1 (HEVC H.265) - 0:38 duration - PDR14 genrated the shadow file in 48 seconds, PDR15 took 45 seconds.

Cheers - Tony

Correct, it appears to not address H.265 source to shadow. CPU load profile for H.265 between PD14 and PD15 is identical so same times would be expected.

Hi,
Just a quick note, the discussion here has been passed onto CyberLink, maybe something will be done by the development team.

My name Dafydd is pronounced Da-Vith and is from the Jewish name David, which is I believe pronounced Da-Veed. My name is not unique or unusual for my little country, so it's not a big deal.

As this is "off-topic" and I'm wandering around aimlessly, I'll add a bit more to the thread and then tell my "alter-ego" off!

************
DAFYDD, it is actually pronounced Da-Vith. In the Welsh language the letter "F" has a "V" sound while two "ff" have a single "f" sound. - such as the English word "of" and off". Now to confuse you even further the "y" has two distinct sounds, one of which is the "i"/"eye" sound. Now as to the two "dd" they have a "th" sound.
**************

Now if you need to add a name as part of the end titles in PowerDirector 15 or any other video editor, (or adding a forum member's name to a post) make sure you spell the contributors or individual names correctly. I've got it wrong once or twice, not something I readily try to repeat.

Another PD15 Shadow file anomaly. PD15 appears to consider HD video being 1920x1080 which triggers shadowfile generation when selected while PD14 triggered shadowfile generation with 1280x720. So what is HD video? If one uses PD15 to generate a HD screen preview, one gets 1280x720, same as PD14. http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/49465.page#260043 So it appears CL uses Full HD to describe 1920x1080 so I guess the pref > General "Enable HD video processing (shadow file)" should really be enable "Full HD video...." for PD15?

Or by chance are they unware they hacked yet another option of this PD15 release.
