Hi Jerry -
Maybe we did lose track of the original question a little, though you did ask about "proxy" files.
I found that most editing software performs much better using the most uncompressed files, called proxy files. It takes a huge load off the CPU.
1. That's true, except that proxy or shadow files are
more compressed (or at least compressed very differently) than the original HD clips. That's what makes them "easier" to use.
2. On your PC, the sort of playback you're getting with CDR effects applied is what you'd expect. With more "modest" specs, using shadow files would be almost a
necessity.
Evidently, shadow files are "not decompressed enough" (confused) to carry corrections made in Color Director back into PD12 without stressing the CPU
3. Here, whether using shadow files or not, the adjustments made in CDR are applied in the same way. There is no visual difference in the produced files that I can see. The difference would be in how smoothly the files play back during editing.
4. On Jeff's note about render times - that had never occurred to me since I very rarely use shadow files. Using the 30 second 4K clip in the table above, I replicated Jeff's steps here, adding a trip to CDR for adjustment. Exactly the same adjustments were applied. Both produced to MPEG-4 3840x2160 @ 50MBps.
With shadow files, final render time was
9:42:26 (i.e. nearly 10 minutes)
Without shadow files applied, it was
9:43:83 - consistent with Jeff's stats above.
This occurs whether or not shadow files are being used. So either my CPU is being stressed...
5. Jerry - you should be seeing a marked difference between how well the files will play back during editing. There's something amiss if your PC has trouble even with shadow files.
Cheers - Tony
